Botox® and fillers are both cosmetic treatments used to enhance the appearance of the skin and reduce the signs of aging. They are commonly used in the field of dermatology and cosmetic surgery. Botox® is short for botulinum toxin and is also the brand name of the most widely known neurotoxin available. Neurotoxins such as Botox have medical and cosmetic applications. Medical uses include muscle spasms, overactive bladder, headaches, and hyperhydrosis. In cosmetics, Botox® is known as wrinkle reduces or wrinkle relaxers. This is because when Botox is injected into facial muscles, there is temporary inhibition of muscular nerve signal transmission leading to temporary paralysis of the targeted muscles. Therefore the facial muscles responsible for creating winkles and expression lines known as dynamic rhytids are no longer contracting, this results in smoothness and tightening of the overlying skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Additionally, studies suggest that Botox®leads to improvements in the biomechanical properties of skin, including elasticity and pliability thus giving the added bonus of skin tightening. Results of skin tightening vary based on sagginess of skin. Botox® and other wrinkle relaxers are used to temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Wrinkle relaxers work by blocking nerve signals in the muscles, which prevents them from contracting. This results in a smoother, more youthful appearance by reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repeated muscle movements like frowning or squinting. Common areas treated with Botox® and other brands products include forehead lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, and frown lines between the eyebrows. The effects of typically last for a few months, after which the treatment needs to be repeated for continued results. Dermal Fillers: Dermal fillers are injectable substances used to restore volume and fullness to the face. Volume in the face is partially provided by fat-pads that are located below the skin’s surface. These fat-pads provide the face its characteristic shape and is a prominent aspect of beauty. A youthful and characteristically beautiful face is well contoured with high cheeks bones, full cheeks, and a defined jawline. Aging is a multi-layered process and continuous process. The surface changes seen in the aging process reflect not only alterations to the skin but also to the structures lying underneath. The structures lying below the skin include the facial muscles, facial fat-pads, and facial skeleton all of which provide volume, fullness, and contour to the face. As we age, the facial skeleton shrinks and the facial fat-pads get thinner and descend leading to sagging of the jawline and jowl formation, increased fullness under the chin, temporal hallowing, droopy eyebrows, lines around the nose and mouth (“nasolabial folds”), loss of lip projection, less defined chin, loss of fullness and flattened cheeks, among others. Dermal fillers thereby minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and sagging. These fillers are often made from various materials, such as hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, and poly-L-lactic acid. Hyaluronic acid fillers  are the most common type and work by adding volume to the skin and attracting water molecules to plump up and smooth out wrinkles. Fillers are used to address static wrinkles, which are present even when the muscles are at rest. They can be used to enhance cheekbones, plump lips, soften nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the mouth), and fill in hollow areas of the face. The effects of dermal fillers can last anywhere from several months to a couple of years, depending on the specific filler used.

The duration of effectiveness for injectable treatments such as Botox® and dermal fillers can vary depending on several factors, including the specific product used, the area of the face treated, an individual’s metabolism, and their overall health. Here’s a general overview of how long these treatments typically last:

The effects of Botox® and other similar wrinkle reducing   injections typically last around 3 to 4 months on average. However, this can vary from person to person. Some individuals might experience shorter duration of effects. Additionally different brands of neuromodulators have different durations of action. The newest neuromodulator on the market Daxify has been shown to last up to 6 months. As the muscles gradually regain their function, the wrinkles and lines that were treated will begin to reappear. To maintain the desired results, follow-up treatments are necessary.

Dermal Fillers: The longevity of dermal fillers depends on the type of filler used and the area of the face treated. Hyaluronic acid fillers, which are commonly used, tend to last between 6 to 18 months. Fillers with higher viscocity might last longer, especially when used in areas with less movement, such as the cheeks. Some fillers can even last up to two years or more. Over time, the body naturally breaks down and absorbs the filler material, causing the effects to gradually diminish. Maintenance treatments are required to sustain the desired results.

It’s important to note that individual responses can vary, and some people may experience longer or shorter durations of effectiveness. Factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and genetics can influence how quickly the body metabolizes the injected substances.

Effects of Botox® are usually seen between 5-7 days after injection but can take up to 10-14 days for maximum effects to be fully appreciated. The majority of patients report seeing results by 3 days, but can be noted as early as 24-48 hours after treatment.

If there is any filler left over (for example if you just use a half syringe), we can dispose of the remaining filler or you can elect to have it injected in other areas of the face during that same session. If you would like Dr. Kling to hold your filler for another time, she can speak to you about that option.

Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used for a variety of medical conditions.

These include:

  • teeth grinding or clenching
  • jawline slimming
  • cervical dystonia
  • migraine prevention.
  • Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating

Treatable areas include:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Chins
  • Foreheads
  • Temples
  • Back of hands

Microbotox, also known as micro-dosing Botox or intradermal Botox, is a cosmetic procedure that involves injecting very small amounts of Botox (botulinum toxin) into the superficial layers of the skin. This technique is different from traditional Botox injections, which target deeper muscles to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Microbotox is primarily used to improve skin texture, reduce pore size, and provide a subtle overall skin rejuvenation.

Dr. Kling uses a topical anesthetic cream that can take 30-45 minutes to take full effect. Patient’s with higher pain threshold can typically wait less than the full 30-45 minutes.  We also use a vibration device that provides additional pain control and helps relax the facial muscles.

We ask our clients to avoid alcoholic beverages the night before their appointment as it can make their skin more susceptible to bruising.

Emerge MD Aesthetics  focuses on improving cosmetic appearance through various treatments. In our practice, the most common areas of the body targeted by aesthetic medicine include:

  1. Face: This is the most common area, with treatments addressing wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation, and other skin irregularities. Procedures include Botox injections, dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser treatments, and facelifts.

  2. Neck: Treatments can address sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Neck lifts and non-invasive skin tightening procedures are popular.

  3. Eyes: Treatments can target dark circles, puffiness, crow’s feet, and drooping eyelids. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and Botox are common procedures.

  4. Lips: Augmentation and rejuvenation treatments can enhance the shape, structure, or volume of the lips using fillers or fat transfer.

  5. Hands: Aging hands can be rejuvenated with fillers, laser treatments, and chemical peels to address volume loss and age spots.
  6. Hair: Hair transplantation and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatments are popular for addressing hair loss.

These areas are targeted to enhance, rejuvenate, or reshape them to achieve a desired aesthetic outcome. The choice of treatment often depends on the specific concerns of the patient and Dr. Kling’s  recommendation.
